Before we get into that, let’s first look at the GPL and what it is. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a term commonly used to describe a family of flammable hydrocarbon gases. The two most popular gases in this family are propane and butane. These two gas engines have commercial and residential uses and similar characteristics, which means that people often confuse the two. Gas can be used as fuel for heating, cooking, hot water, cars, refrigerators, and many other things.

What is propane and what is butane?

Propane, which comes from natural gas processing and petroleum refining, is a flammable hydrocarbon gas that evaporates under pressure. It is mainly used for heating and cooking, but it can be used for a variety of residential and commercial purposes, from domestic hot water to supplying restaurant kitchens.

Propane is an efficient and portable fuel made of carbon and hydrogen atoms – chemical symbol C3H8 – which is a byproduct of gas processing and oil refining. Propane is often referred to as LPG or LPG. It is a gas compressed and stored in liquid form. Propane is non-toxic, colorless, and almost odorless – that’s why the identifying point is added so it can be easily found.

Meanwhile, butane is also a flammable hydrocarbon gas that comes from gas processing and oil refining. Butane, on the other hand, is often used as a fuel, propellant, and refrigerant.

If they are so similar, why is their conflict important? Although both have similar properties, there are some differences between propane and butane that can be beneficial or detrimental depending on how you intend to use them.

What is the difference between the two?

When comparing propane and butane, the main difference comes down to the point of the gas. Propane has a boiling point of -42°C, whereas butane’s boiling point is at -2°C. This means that propane will continue to heat up and turn into gas in cold weather, which is perfect for the cold weather we have here in Ontario and for outdoor use. When stored as a liquid in a tank, propane also exhibits a higher pressure than butane at the same temperature. This makes it better for security and the outdoors.

Are there any similarities?

Propane and butane both come from the same source and are part of the LPG family, which means that there are many similarities between the two gases – the most important of which is their environmental friendliness.

Although propane produces more heat than butane and is more efficient in combustion, butane has a characteristic that is also beneficial to the environment: it evaporates quickly, making it easy to obtain. With both gases, there are no negative effects on the environment. Both propane and butane are safe, non-toxic, clean-burning fuel sources of energy. Being lower in carbon than oil, gasoline, diesel, kerosene, and ethanol, propane and butane have fewer greenhouse gas emissions per unit of production than other fuels.

Can butane or propane be stored safely?

The fact that butane is less toxic than propane gas, combined with the fact that it can be stored and used indoors, makes it an ideal choice for campers everywhere.
